This one's been on my youtube for a couple days, but I'm only now getting around to writing about it. This is one of those weird things I did during one of my sick days this week. It was more or less just to see if it could be done, since to my knowledge no one has ever written a script to make crossbreeding possible, and it really wasn't that difficult. It just involved writing a breeding script out manually instead of using the the convenient "mate" command that does it all for you.
I wish I could say "no norns were harmed in the making of this video" but I would be lying. Guess I better watch out for ERFN. The thing about this script is though it makes interspecies breeding possible, it would still be very rare for it to happen naturally, since by instinct creatures generally stay within their species when looking for a mate (and normal grendels would probably beat a norn senseless before considering fathering her mutant child). It would probably either take a lot of encouragement, or a script like the one I used for this video that keeps creatures fertile and tells them to constantly push each other.
Still, it's really nice to have that possibility open. We've all had situations where the rogue norn wanders off to join the ettin tribe or the supposed-vicious grendel finds an odd friendship among the norns... What if those interactions had the potential of going further? It could add a whole new dimension to the game.
Anyway, like all my projects, the script is far from finished (right now it's not even checking to see if creatures are old enough before executing the script which is a little weird); I more or less just wanted to see if it could be done so I didn't bother coding in all those doifs. How long it takes me to finish it will depend on my free time and how interested you guys are in it, so if this strikes your fancy, do make your voice heard so I can figure out where to fit it in my priority list!
Wow, this is an excellent idea! I always thought that since Norns and Grendels are almost identical genetically, it would be interesting to see what their offspring would look like. Using the splicer seems so artificial, too, especially when situations like the ones you mention take place involving Norns joining the other species. I would be very interested in following this project, since it's something quite different and unique. Good luck putting it together!
ReplyDeleteExcellent! I would be very interested to have this. Especially as splices often want to mate with the wrong species.
ReplyDeleteI am guessing in the scene with the succesive pregnancies, the script did not check to see if the creature was already pregnant?
@Jessica -- Glad that you approve! That is probably my main motivation behind this script: to allow for "natural" hybrids. Granted I don't know that anything about a huge green reptile managing to produce offspring with a furry mouse-like creature is natural, but... it's still closer than splicing :)
ReplyDelete@ylukyun -- that's a good point; I don't usually take the time to raise spliced creatures but I can see how they might have problems deciding what they are supposed to mate with-- with this, they can have their pick.
I'm fairly sure all the pregnancies in the video resulted from other creatures in the world that were also affected by the mating script when I triggered it. But that is something I should still double check; thanks for bringing it up.
I'm curious, what's the room they're in?
ReplyDeleteThe room is part of Battlestance, another one of those wild projects I started and never finished. Even though it's nothing more than a barren room with lifts, it was still my first attempt at a metaroom, so I still have some attachment to it and tend to use it as a blank test room on occasion :)
ReplyDeleteWould definitely be interested in seeing this script finished.
ReplyDeleteAs you say, you occasionally get those norns that decided to run off and socialise with the other species. I've currently got 3 norns who seem to have decided to take up permanent residence in the jungle. And all the ettins seem to want to live in the norn terrarium.
Would be very interesting to see the results of natural breeding possibilities. And if nothing else it eliminates the problem of those grenorn half-breeds being restricted to breeding with the one species.
@Arch -- My ettins always seemed to like the norn terrarium better than the desert too (oddly, the ettins also seemed to kill off more of my norns than the grendels did).
ReplyDelete@Amaikokonut
ReplyDeleteLol, I can't say the ettins are killing off my norns (unless you count the occassional disease they bring in). I've even gone to the effort of adding plants, seeds and carrots into the desert environment and they still come visiting my norns. Wonder if it has anything to do with the volcano constantly going off...
Wow! This is really interesting. You should definately finish it.
ReplyDeleteThe metaroom is also interesting, so don't give up on some of your old projects.
You used as Daedalus pic for your banner too! Makes me happy!!
I -So- want to see this finished... Ive been looking around for something like this since I started playing C3... I know its an odd thing to want but... I have always felt it unnatural that the various races could not breed. I simply don't care for splicing as its just not natural, seeing as the creatures don't have any choice. Having a script like this to use would be beyond amazing.
ReplyDeleteThis is awesome,amaikokonut!
ReplyDeleteI first saw this on your'e youtubeclip and actuly asked if this script could be shared...and when I did that I didn't notice it was you (didn't pay attention to the username *blush* very sorry about that ^^') but Im glad I did have a re-chek on it and then saw it was you,so I could try and find info about it,and now I finaly see why it's not released. I think this would make gameplaying more interessting with this!
I do hope you will be able to get some free time and finish this *_*
I love this script, do you think you will ever finish it? I would love to use it in my worlds, I love crossbreeding my creatures.
ReplyDeleteNice! I really hope you will finish this someday. It's something I've really wished to have in the game.
