The Mythical Elevine

We're approaching the final few days of CCSF and as far as this blog goes, it's going to end rather anticlimactically. Maybe I should have planned and saved all the really shiny stuff for the last few days, but that's just not how my developing mind works. No, instead the last few days are likely going to consist of little odds and ends I'm tying up just to get them off my to-do list. But I guess that's okay, since I assume everyone else is releasing their greatest masterpieces themselves over the last few days, and there will be plenty else to play with.

This was pretty much the last thing on my list to pack up and ship out, agent-wise, and I'm honestly not a hundred percent sure I like them as they are, but since giving my instinctless norns the ability to use normal lifts again, these aren't as vital. Though they still are a lot of fun for customizing worlds to your liking, I probably won't be putting a lot more effort into tweaking them, so I figured I'll just call them done for now.

Download the Elevines. A thousand thanks to Mea, both for the beautiful sprites and for extensive bugtesting!

As a fair warning, I have had these throw errors a few times on me, but I've never been able to replicate the errors or generally figure out what has been going wrong, so do report any bugs you find in as much detail as possible.

  1. Totally unrelated, I know, but what CAOS code are you using to have your creature names under them on screen in your games?

  2. So, on a related note... totally cool. You just solved the age old problem of lifts for metaroom developers!

  3. These are awesome! Not sure if I've ever had anything but good things to say about your releases. I can see a whole lot of uses for the Elevines, though, since they're pretty much just awesome! Thanks also to Mea for the sprites: They not just function, but they look beautiful!

I'll have to install these later on and let you know if I encounter any problems. Awesome!

  4. These will be awesome fun to play with. By the looks of it there's no reason you couldn't use them as teleporters, and move a Norn to a completely different room, rather than just up and down.
I can see these being a great tool for helping Norns get around the world a little easier for migration worlds and such.

  5. Not sure these are Mac compatible - the key combinations "Shift+Click" and "Control+Click" don't seem to work. :( I could just not be using it right.

  6. Do the elevines CA link with each other?

    1. Currently they do not, but it's certainly possible and will probably happen eventually. Since CA linking happens between -rooms- and not agents, it would require that the elevines be locked into place (creating the links in the current rooms) before being usable/visible to creatures and then unlocked (breaking the links) before moving them around. Right now I'm trying to ponder a way to depict the locked/unlocked status visually without it being too complex, since the two orbs already have their assigned purposes. I'm thinking maybe just darkening the color of the orbs for "unlocked/inactive" status and then returning to their normal shade when they're locked/active.

    2. Wouldn't it be possible to make make them emit CA based on how much of it is around the others of the system? That would need to be part of the 9 script, and each one would have to check how much CA is around others (wich is basicly what the C3 smell detector does) and than acording to that emit CA itself (like the C3 smell emiter does).

  7. I just started a new docked world, & decided to try out the elevines in the norn meso instead of having the lift. Unfortunately, I can't seem to get my norns to pay any attention to the elevines. I've tried both "push lift" and "push button" (I'm not actually sure which is the correct word!), and they just completely ignore them, even though they're pretty good about doing most other things I tell them to. They went right to the lift button in the workroom when I dropped them in for their IQ test, so it's not an issue with being retarded about lifts. ;) Any suggestions?

    1. Good to hear it!
In DS, unless you've modded the vocabulary, lifts are classified as "elevator", so it's possible they just didn't understand. Furthermore though, pushing an elevator takes the creature up (and thus won't work on the top floor) and pulling one takes it down. The elevines work the same way :> Hope this helps for the future!
